Case Study

Narrowed Topic
earthquakes in Japan

1. What is the specific topic your group decided to focus on?
The specific topic that our group is focusing on is mitigating the effect of earthquakes of Japan. Japan is located on the ring of fire which is a ring that lots of earthquakes and volcanic eruption occurs. Therefore, there are lots of earthquakes happening in Japan. People from Japan have been working on making stable structures and they try to prevent the deaths of people. Therefore, many people know well about prevention for earthquake.

2. Which organization did you choose to focus on and why?
We picked the organization NEES since this organization is performing many experiments to reduce the amount of deaths. Another reason we have chose this organization is because this organization is performing experiments that allows the engineers to build sturdy buildings that would withstand the earthquakes and possibly other natural disasters too.

3. What exactly are they doing to try and combat or change your issue?
We are trying to mitigate the effect of earthquake by finding ways to prevent them. Although people from Japan know about the prevention for earthquakes, there are other things however that will kill them. As building collapses, the pieces broken from the building falls down on the people inside. Many people die this way. There are many other natural disasters that occur because of earthquakes. Tsunami's and landslides for example. To try to prevent an Earthquake, it is important to make a geological map so that the people who are researching can make statistics on the rate of earthquakes. If the levels of earthquakes are high in average, we can think of a better prevention. Because earthquakes happen unexpectedly, people always have to be prepared. Therefore, I think that we need to raise the awareness about the effectiveness of quick prevention by showing the simulation on Kobe earthquake. the Kobe Earthquake was rated about 8.0 magnitude which is able to make a landslide, a fire, collapse buildings and more. 4. What are some of the things you like about their program?
The thing I like about NEES is how determined they are to try to mitigate earthquakes. They have separate groups inside the organization that have different jobs. Also, they have separate calenders, some for buissness, others for onlookers. They have events where people can come for workshops, to learn about NEES.

5. How do you plan to become involved with this organization or model your action plan after it?
My group and I want to donate money to NEES so that they can conduct tests on how an Earthquake works. We could also donate to Weather stations, and victims of Earthquakes. We could help rebuild lives, and homes. And try to help these people start all over.
